Barış Petekleri/ Peace Honeycombs

Barış Petekleri, Gonca Hanım (ornitorenk handmade) sayesinde haberdar olduğum bir proje. Konusu adı üzerinde evrensel barış. Çanakkale'de, açıkhavada kalıcı olacak uluslararası bir resim ve fotoğraf sergisi. Ben hayatım boyunca hiç resim yapmadım. (Eskiz defterime yaptıklarım hariç) Başvuru için gereken özgeçmişe ne yazacağım diye düşünüp, başvurmaktan vazgeçmişken Gonca Hanım yine beni cesaretlendirdi. "Başvuru süresi uzatıldı" dedi :) Ona ne kadar teşekkür etsem azdır. Son gün yolladım dosyalarımı. Kabul geldi. Teslim tarihinden iki gün önce de bitmiş resmi postaladım. Sergi Çanakkale'de kuruldu ve 25 Nisan 2024'te açıldı. Yani Çanakkale Savaşı'nın 100. yılında, Anzak Günü'nde. İlk katılım çağrısına 600'den fazla sanatçı katılmış. Ancak hedef 1000 kişi olduğu için 2. çağrı da açık. Ağustos ayında tekrar başvuru alınacak.

Peace Honeycombs is a project i was made aware of thanks to Gonca Hanım (ornitorenk handmade). The theme is universal peace as the name implies. It is a permanent, international, open air painting and photography exhibition set to be placed in Çanakkale, Turkey. I have never painted in my life. (Except the ones in my sketchbook) I thought about the cv required for application and i declined as i did not know what to write. But Gonca Hanım encouraged me again and said the application period was extended. I am really thankful. I have sent my files on the last day. I was accepted. I have posted my painting two days prior the due date. The exhibition had been set up in Çanakkale and opened on April 25, 2024. On the 100th anniversary of Çanakkale Wars, on the Anzac Day. More than 600 artists joined in on the first call. But the target is 1000 artists. Thus the 2nd call is open and the second opening will be in August. In August new applications will be accepted.

Hayatımda ilk defa gidip tuval bezi (kanvas?) aldım. Böyle bir şeymiş. Kumaş üzerinde önde va arkada iki tabaka var.

I bought canvas fabric for the first time in my life. Here it is. There is one layer on the front and back of the fabric.

Önce peteğin ölçülerini işaretleyerek başladım.

First i drew the dimensions of the honeycomb on the canvas.

Sonra genel yerleşimi oturtmaya çalıştım. Tabii ki yazılı bir şeyler yapacaktım.

Then i tried to plan the general layout. Of course it would involve text.

Fonu gökkuşağı renklerine boyamak istedim. Yerlerini test ettim.

I wanted to paint the background in rainbow colors. I tested their locations.

Renkleri akrilikle tuvale aktardım.

I transferred the colors with acrylic onto canvas.

Metni ekledim. Yaprakların biraz kanat gibi gözükmesini istemiştim. Sözcükler uçuyormuş hissi versin diye. Bilmiyorum ne kadar becerebildim...

I have added the text. I wanted the leaves to look like wings a bit. To pretend the words are flying. I do not know if i could achieve it...

Sonuç olarak sergi açıldı. Resmim ve ismim orada, peteklerin arasında :) Yukarıdaki iki fotoğraf web sayfasından alıntı, ben henüz gidip kendim göremedim. Ama gitme niyetindeyim.

Tuval üzerine yaptığım ilk resim kalıcı bir sergiye katıldı. Nasıl mutlu olduğumu anlatamam. Biliyorum çok naif, kimileri için saçma. Ama benim için çok önemli. Geçen yaz gelen savaş haberlerinin arasında bir kartın üzerine "Barış! Hemen şimdi!" yazmıştım. Tek istediğim buydu, kişisel ve toplumsal barış, birazcık huzur. 1,5 yıl sonra önüme çıkan bu sergi o ilk çağrının devamı gibiydi benim için. Sanatın iyiliği tetikleme gücü var, kötülüğü eleştirme görevi de. İnanıyorum, "dünyayı güzellik kurtaracak".

Finally, the exhibition opened. My painting and my name are there, among the other peace honeycombs :) The two photos above are taken from the website, i could not see it personally yet. But i am planning to go and visit.

My first painting on a canvas ever had joined a permanent exhibition. I can't describe how happy i am. I know it sounds so naive, even ridiculous. But it is important for me. Last summer, among the war news i wrote "peace right now!" on a card. My only wish was this; personal and public peace, a little rest. This exhibition which came my way after 1,5 years was like the continuation of my first call. Art has the power to trigger good as much as the duty to criticize evil. I believe, "the world will be saved by beauty".
